Thyroid Gland: Hypothyroidism and Myxedema

This topic covers hypothyroidism, a condition of thyroid hormone deficiency, with a focus on its presentation in older children and adults, known as myxedema. Zambian university students will learn about the general causes, including primary thyroid failure (e.g., Hashimoto's thyroiditis), consequences of surgery or radiation, and secondary pituitary causes. The clinical manifestations are characterized by a slowing of physical and mental activity, fatigue, apathy, weight gain, cold intolerance, and the characteristic non-pitting edema (myxedema) causing coarse facial features. Understanding this hypometabolic state is crucial for differential diagnosis of fatigue, weight gain, and depression. This knowledge is vital for pathology and clinical medicine examinations and for managing a common condition seen in general practice and endocrine clinics throughout Zambia.
