Vulvar and Vaginal Pathology

This topic explores a range of pathological conditions affecting the vulva and vagina, forming a key part of gynecologic pathology for Zambian tertiary students. You will learn about inflammatory disorders (vulvitis, Bartholin cyst), non-neoplastic epithelial changes (lichen sclerosus, lichen simplex chronicus), and neoplastic conditions from condylomas to invasive squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. For the vagina, the focus is on vaginitis, intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN), and rare tumors like clear cell adenocarcinoma and sarcoma botryoides. Understanding the link to HPV infection is a central theme. This knowledge is vital for clinical diagnosis, performing and interpreting colposcopy, and managing both common complaints and pre-cancerous lesions. It prepares you for exams and for roles in gynecology, dermatology, or pathology, directly contributing to women's health services in Zambia.
