Basal Cell Carcinoma of the Skin

This topic focuses on basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common skin cancer worldwide, arising from basal cells of the epidermis. Zambian tertiary students will learn that BCC is strongly linked to chronic sun exposure and is most common in lightly pigmented individuals. It is characterized by local invasiveness but has an exceedingly low metastatic potential. The classic clinical presentation is a pearly papule or nodule with telangiectasia (visible dilated blood vessels), often described as having a rolled border. It may ulcerate, forming a 'rodent ulcer.' Understanding that BCC is a locally destructive tumor requiring complete excision but rarely spreads is a key learning point. This knowledge is fundamental for skin cancer diagnosis and management, and is a high-yield topic for dermatology and pathology examinations at Zambian colleges and universities.

Outcomes

If you passGreat work! You understand the classic appearance and the locally invasive but rarely metastatic behavior of basal cell carcinoma.
If you don't pass yetMemorize the classic description: 'pearly papule with telangiectasia.' Remember, while it rarely metastasizes, it can cause significant local tissue destruction if neglected.
