Ovarian and Fallopian Tube Pathology

This topic addresses the complex pathology of the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Zambian tertiary students in pathology and gynecology will study non-neoplastic conditions like functional cysts and salpingitis (often part of PID), as well as the major categories of ovarian tumors. These include surface epithelial-stromal tumors (serous, mucinous), germ cell tumors (e.g., mature cystic teratoma), and sex cord-stromal tumors. You will learn about risk factors like nulliparity and BRCA mutations, classification based on histology and behavior (benign, borderline, malignant), and clinical presentation. Understanding this material is critical for evaluating pelvic masses, managing infertility, and diagnosing ovarian cancer. It prepares you for challenging exam questions on tumor histogenesis and differential diagnosis, supporting future roles in surgical pathology, gynecologic oncology, and clinical practice in Zambia.
