Parathyroid Hormone and Calcium Homeostasis

This topic covers the physiology of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and its central role in calcium and phosphate homeostasis. Zambian tertiary students will learn the three primary actions of PTH: 1) activating osteoclasts to mobilize calcium from bone, 2) increasing renal tubular reabsorption of calcium and excretion of phosphate, and 3) stimulating renal conversion of vitamin D to its active form (calcitriol), which enhances intestinal calcium absorption. Understanding this integrated system is foundational for grasping the pathologies of hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism. This knowledge is crucial for university examinations in physiology and systemic pathology and is directly applicable to managing disorders of bone metabolism and renal stone disease in clinical practice in Zambia.

Outcomes

If you passExcellent! You have a firm grasp of how PTH meticulously regulates serum calcium levels through its coordinated actions on bone, kidney, and intestine.
If you don't pass yetFocus on memorizing the three target organs of PTH (bone, kidney, intestine) and the specific effect on calcium and phosphate at each site. The feedback loop with serum calcium is key.
